San Francisco Peeps, You Should Read This

I have more information about the troubles that are likely to brew up in SF's Mission district that I wrote about earlier.

From three different sources (two cops and a member of a Hell's Angels affiliate gang), the number of Hell's Angels and affiliates that will be coming to the area over the next week is expected to be between fifteen and twenty-five thousand.

This will likely have it's "head" on Monday, September 15th. Why? Because that is the date of the funeral for Mark Guardado, the leader of the SF chapter of Hell's Angels who was shot and killed last week.

There have been several shootings every day since the initial incident in the Mission. Not all of these may be related.

I have heard the following, though take this with a grain of salt:

* There has been discussion of a dusk-to-dawn curfew (unlikely, and shot down because of the impact to business)
* Police officers are going to be pulling 18 hour shifts (possible)
* Additional police officers from the surrounding cities and counties are going to be brought in (likely)

Another thing that I got clarification about (and was incorrect on): MS 13 is not "moving into the area." They're already here and have been, but we call them Sureños (this, and not "Sudenos", is apparently the correct spelling).

I was told by both cops and gang members that it "is going to be bad" and to tell my friends who live in the Mission to stay indoors at night over the next week. To wit: "no one is gonna get shot sitting on their ass watching football."

It is advised that you do not wear the color blue over the next week or so as the Sureños claim blue.

I don't want to sound like an alarmist but I'd rather my friends be a little more paranoid and cautious for a week than put into pine boxes forever because they just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

And suddenly, I am glad to have moved to Oakland, despite someone joyriding my Honda last month. Thanks for the heads-up -- I still end up in the Mission a lot after spending the workday in Potrero Hill.

I live at Bryant & 17th St, about seven blocks north of where the gunplay is occurring, so this topic is interesting to me. Here's what I've been reading and hearing, and of course take what I say with a lump of salt.

I went to SF General Hospital early on Aug 22nd with back problems, and the ER at the time was loaded up with gunshot wounds. I asked the medical staff whether the number of gunshot victims was normal for any given night, and they said yes. However, they didn't get specific about geography, so the gunshot victims could have come from anywhere in SF, and my visit to SFGH happened just as the abovementioned spate of killings was getting started.

Supposedly the Hells Angels chapter is located somewhere in Dogpatch. Depending on where exactly it is, I either am or am not along the route one would travel to get between Dogpatch and where the violence has been occurring. Having said that, there has been no noticeable change in traffic patterns here. Normally about 5 or so very loud bikes drive up Florida St, past my windows, through the course of any given night.

If the cops are expecting 20,000 Hells Angels to show up, I would have expected a little more media coverage. After all, this kind of story would sell papers, wouldn't it? Nonetheless, I will still be going to the store at sunrise, and will tilt toward safety for the time being.

All gunshot wounds are taken to SF General, as that hospital (strangely enough) has one of the best trauma response ERs in the country.

The Sureños v Norteños thing is nothing new, that's a California staple of gang warfare, going back as long as I can remember paying attention to such things. Though it might be going through a particularly violent period in SF right now.

Also, the "sudeños" misspelling is understandable, given that's more or less the proper pronunciation (a soft "d"-ish sound for the 'n').

And we have another death this morning.

Authorities described Lechado as a "mid-level" member of the MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, street gang. They believe the slayings of two men later Thursday night may have been in retaliation for his shooting.

Edit: originally misread article as to indicate shooting occurred this morning when it happened last night; he died this morning.

Shooting happened last Thursday, he died on Friday, confirmation this morning:
Giovanni Lechado, 28, of San Francisco was pronounced dead at San Francisco General Hospital about 11:50 a.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner's office. Authorities did not confirm his death until today.

More on the Mission violence
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/09/09/BAMD12QO2U.DTL

"Authorities described Lechado as a 'mid-level' member of the MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, street gang. ... Lechado was shot [at 18th and Bryant,] near a bar that investigators say is popular with Sureño and MS-13 members."

Re: More on the Mission violence
His wife was also shot, but his kid (also in the car) was not.

Leads to my concerns about bystanders getting popped.
