An exhibit about Watchmen is is opening at the SF Cartoon Art Museum at the end of February.

I know KBK is going to be down for this. Anyone else?

The Fuck You Friends.

In my idealized universe, there are superhero teams made up of dead comedians.

The Fuck You Friends (pronounced like "Fuck you, friends!") has a membership thus:

George Burns, the grizzled, war-weary super-mind who leads the team remotely from a secret bunker in Beverly Hills;
Gracie Allen, George's most trusted adviser;
Lenny Bruce, the "bad boy" scrapper who keeps getting the team into fights with other super-teams (also thrown into jail);
Andy Kaufman, the alien from planet Bizzaro who thinks outside the box and is just as likely to punch his own teammates as the bad-guys;
Lucille Ball, the group's bombshell and mechanical genius;
Phil Hartman, the "Aquaman" of the group;
Bill Hicks, who is the non-superpowered genius of the group and lives in cave;
Sam Kinison, whose sonic scream can devastate entire blocks;
John Candy, the character who best embodies the teams 'heart';
Bernie Mac, the team's smooth-talking con-man type;
Richard Pryor, who can set himself on fire;
Mitch Hedberg, the guy with connections to get the drugs;
George Carlin, whose powerful fists can shatter steel; and
John Ritter, the team's secretly subversive PR man (who eventually betrays them).

The team spends their days doing drugs and committing minor crimes. Every now and then they come into conflict with other teams made up of undead pop/rock musicians and the corpse of JFK.

I would subscribe to a comic about this. [info]crisper needs to pitch it to his people.

Whys and Wherefores

Holy smokes.

I just finished the last volume of Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan.

It has been a long, long time since a graphic novel has affected me emotionally - enough to (seriously) shrinkwrap my eyes.

Holy fuck, what a great story.

Completely irritating, because Bill Sienkiewicz looks like he's just scribbling.

Some Stuff

First, I am the fucking Wolverine, bitches.

Second, I am the goddamned Batman.

And you fucking know it.

Went and saw The Bank Job with Maynard tonight and it far exceeded my expectations. I'm not entirely sure that I buy the "true story" part of it - though much of it was true, as far as my memory goes (e.g., Michael X did indeed put a slave collar on some dude - it was a big scandal - and he was executed for murdering an Englishwoman in Trinidad). But as to whether or not the entire thing was over some porn shots of Princess Margaret in a threesome? Dunno.

Anyways, still fun. Plus, English slang from the 70s is totally awesome.

I am now reading 52 at the suggestion of [info]crisper, who call it (and I quote), "one of the very very rare times where a story-by-committee actually pulled it off". Since Mr. Elderdan has a bit of a pedigree when it comes to the DCU and the Justice League in particular, I plunked down the 70 bucks or so to get the entire run.

If he makes me regret it, I'll. . .well. I don't know what I'll do. But "butchering a couple hoboes" is pretty high on the list.

But that's like, a hobby anyway.

So far it's good, though. The storyline follows a bunch of minor characters that I never really got into (like Booster Gold) and sort of peels them apart. Not sure what I think of the "Batwoman is a lesbian" bit - that feels tacked on and forced so far (but then, turning Montoya into a lesbian felt tacked on a forced, too, so what are ya gonna do).

rant/tangent on characterization in comic books )

Oh, yeah.

Happy Easter.

Guest Artists

There is something in the water of the webcomics world today, as about 90% of the strips I read were done today by the same guy: Ryan Estrada. There is no mention of why this is is on his site, but he's managed to nail every single comic he did. The humor is bang-on for all of them, and the art is all done in the original author's style.

He apparently makes custom comic books on commission, and if I had the ducats right now, I'd drop them on one (though, I don't know what it would be about). The one he wrote about MODOK is funny as hell and I peed a little reading it.

Here are the ones I've found so far:

* Dinosaur Comics
* Alien Loves Predator
* Overcompensating
* Scary-Go-Round
* Patches (I swear, I would have thought this was Kelly Hingos' work if his name wasn't on it)
* Wigu
* Goats
* Starslip Crisis
* YirMuMah
* Questionable Content
* Beaver and Steve
* Little Gamers
* Dr. McNinja
* Ugly Hill
* Sam and Fuzzy

Who is this guy? Why have I not heard of him before?
